ABOUT THE BOOK
Breakaway: The International Medical Graduate’s Guide to Alternative Careers is a thoroughly researched, comprehensive book that will give you an edge and guide you to a fulfilling career. The unknown path holds mystery and danger; it also holds promise and hope. This book will serve as a guiding light into the unknown. It will illuminate possibilities and probabilities.
This book is divided into three sections. The first section of this book emphasizes the importance of aligning thoughts with desires. You will begin with realizing your own breakthrough, refocusing your vision, and reinventing your perspectives. Each chapter highlights exemplary persons in history who have made significant contributions to humanity and illustrates their journey to becoming experts in their fields. By the conclusion of this section, you will be well on your way to redeveloping your growth mindset and restructuring your neurons. You will also receive challenges to create headway for beginning your journey.
The second section will arm you with knowledge of available alternative careers, highlighting interviews with medical doctors around the world who pivoted to non-traditional careers outside of medicine. Each chapter contains an overview, a definition of the profession, a sample case, and the roles and responsibilities of that career. It then progresses to the necessary skills and training needed to succeed, the pros and cons of the career, and future growth potential. Each profession is woven with anecdotes from a professional in that field. Each chapter concludes with a “Now What?” scenario suggesting steps you can take to start that career. Armed with the congruence of thoughts and knowledge, you will be ready to embark on actionable strategies.
Thoughts and knowledge accomplish little without accompanying action. The third section explains how to put ideas to work by suggesting tangible activities that will make you a robust candidate for your chosen career. It tackles the importance of sharpening your knowledge, strengthening your network, and selecting your mentors. Each chapter provides a step-by-step guide to pursuing each activity. By the end of the chapter, you will also receive a challenge to escalate your progress.
